This Natural Hemp Scarf was hand woven with 100% hemp yarn. Its colouring and pattern makes it a perfect unisex design
The hemp scarf has been woven using 5 ply thread making it a warm snuggly scarf for winter. The scarf width is narrower than a standard pashmina or shawl due to the size of the loom. This makes for comfort around the neck and being already a supple product hemp gets softer with wear.
This Natural Hemp Scarf has been handwoven by the Hmong people of Vietnam. It is important also to appreciate the time and effort that goes into making your scarf.Making hemp fibre for the Hmong loom is an extremely long process. The hemp plant grows for about 2 ½ months before it is harvested. The leaves are then stripped away and the stalks are dried for 15 days before being peeled. Then, the peeled stalks are twisted together and pounded to make them softer. It’s then polished with either paraffin wax, beeswax or vegetable starch (wheat, corn, or potato) to protect the underlying fibres. Finally, the fibres are spun into skeins of thread, washed in ash water and wound into a ball. The arduous process can take over 3 months before any weaving actually begins!
